U2-Scored Spidey Musical Loses Its Mary Jane

The forthcoming Spider-Man musical scheduled to debut on Broadway has experienced the latest setback in a production which has been plagued by roadblocks.

According to Variety, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark producers for the show have confirmed that actress Evan Rachel Wood, who was cast in the role of love interest Mary-Jane Watson, has quit the musical.

Wood reportedly exited because of a "scheduling conflict." The show, which features songs written by U2 stars Bono and The Edge, pushed back its original preview date of February 25th, because of budgeting issues and other production snafus.

"She's the greatest actor of her generation, she’s the one to watch,” Bono exalted after Wood was cast in the production. “She happens to sing like a bird, it’s like a true voice. She’s a very pure spirit and a very bright mind and she brings the part of MJ to life, really.”

Complicating matters, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has dealt with a "cash flow" problem since Rolling Stone reported it in August 2009, and the show's budget has ballooned to almost $50 million, putting it in league with some of the most expensive Broadway shows in history.

Variety also reported that the production is still slated to begin previews in the late summer with an opening date around Halloween. However, no dates have been officially confirmed by Spider-Man's producers.
